From statue to flesh and blood, a hatted figure two days running. So I don't *actually* know if this fellow is indeed a pilgrim (ohenro-san) or priest (obo-san). In fact, since he's not wearing white, he probably isn't a pilgrim. And judging by his footwear (woven from plastic rope), he's probably not a priest. But, … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Ohenro-san? Obo-san? Hatted Man in the Street
Photo of the Day: Kobo Daishi of Joju Temple
More love for Joju-in, the temple on the hill by our inn. Though it be but small, it is rather photogenic. And convenient. Kobo Daishi, also known as Kukai (his name while he was living), was a Buddhist priest and founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. He's a major character in Japanese Buddhism and … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Kobo Daishi of Joju Temple
Photo of the day: Wakame in the Wind
Wakame season began a few weeks ago, as mentioned in a previous post. But, as the season progresses, we eat less fresh wakame and more dried. First, of course, you have to dry it, though. So, our little stretch of beach finds itself covered in clothes lines full of wakame. Before hanging, the wakame is … Continue reading Photo of the day: Wakame in the Wind
Photo of the Day: Snowy Dragon
Throwback... Tuesday? This is a shot from our January 1st snowfall. It didn't last long, but it was fun to play around in. The temple at the top of the hill by the inn became our playground, with Kaede and Hisashi even having a bit of a snowball fight.
Photo of the Day: Two Trains in the Night
Hase Station is one of the "double track" stations, where trains running in opposite directions along the one-track line can meet and do a little switch over. The trains stop for a little longer than usual, which gave me the chance to hop off and run around to snap a photo.
Photo of the Day: Hobbies
Stand-up paddle boarding, surfing, body boarding and fishing–these are the main water-based hobbies in our area. I await the day I can capture all four sports in one photo, but for now, two will have to do. There's a spot at the edge of Kotsubo Marina where the waves break just so, making it a … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Hobbies
Photo of the Day: The Wind-Up Car
There is a wind-up key on the back of this car. If you look very carefully, you'll be able to see it. Now, I assume that it's just there for looks, but one never knows with eccentric motor vehicles and their equally eccentric owners. This particular car is usually parked in front of one of … Continue reading Photo of the Day: The Wind-Up Car
Photo of the Day: Daruma Stacking
They look pretty fierce, but stacked up like that takes a bit of their bite away. These guys are another one of the fabulous window displays along Yuigahama Road. They're not always obvious—more often than not, they're just tiny embellishments–so you'll need a sharp eye (or someone whose eye level is considerably lower than your … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Daruma Stacking
Photo of the Day: Where Rickshaws Sleep
Wandering the streets of Kamakura, be prepared to be assailed by earnest and uber-enthusiastic rickshaw drivers. Usually young, strong men, they stand ready with broad smiles, kind words, and fantastic split-toed tabi boots. It's hard to say no to their charm, but I'd be dead broke if I went everywhere by rickshaw. In fact, so … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Where Rickshaws Sleep
Photo of the Day: All Buttoned Up
Kamakura has a fair few whimsical, fantastical shops, but not a one has drawn my eye quite so curiously as the Fuji Button shop. Maybe it's the card stock button displays on the shop's outer walls. Maybe it's the promise of wonderful and fun notions inside for sewing projects I'll probably never finish. I'm not … Continue reading Photo of the Day: All Buttoned Up
