There is a small shrine down the road from us that gets very few visitors. It's a branch of another shrine in town, so it's not completely neglected, but it does feel rather abandoned.
Photo of the Day: Surf Lessons
As I walked by Enoshima Beach the other day, I noticed a group of people all moving in odd ways at the same time. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was a surfing school, and the students were doing a dry-land run of paddle-crouch-stand.
Photo of the Day: Typhoon Prep
Typhoon # 11 is pouring its way through Japan right now, and though Kamakura isn't in the storm's direct path, it's still going to get some wind, rain and wave action. To keep their boats from getting washed away, the fishermen along our beach drag their boats up to street-level—and sometimes pretty much along the … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Typhoon Prep
Photo of the Day: Summer Fuji
Usually by July, the heat and humidity produce enough haze to make Mt. Fuji but a dim memory for those along the Shonan coast. But I guess the wind has been blowing hard enough to keep the haze at bay, because this morning, Mt. Fuji was still plenty visible. While you can't see it from … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Summer Fuji
Photo of the Day: Momiji
Maple leaves hang down at the Kamakura Museum of Literature. The museum has beautiful, wide-open grounds, a rose festival in spring, and lots of small concerts and presentations throughout the year.
Photo of the Day: Just Hanging Around
One of the activities at the festival at Yuigahama Seaside Beach last month was puppet making. We didn't get a chance to try, but I just loved the look of the puppets hanging around.
Photo of the Day: Clover
This photo could have been taken anywhere in the world. But it's from the park just down the road from us. I love how some flowers seem to be everywhere.
Photo of the Day: Mochi Making
Every once in a while, Kosoku-ji has a little market. Last time, there was a booth making mochi (pounded rice). Visitors took turns pounding the mochi with a big wooden hammer (even Kaede got to try), after which, the staff shaped and flavoured the mochi. Sadly, I didn't get a good shot of the pounding, … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Mochi Making
Photo a Day: A Snail’s Life
While on a walk yesterday, Kaede and I noticed snails. Lots and lots of huge snails. And not on the ground, but rather high up in bushes. Like swirly flowers, I guess.
Photo of the Day: Tanabata
I'm a day late, but here is a wee post on Tanabata, the Star Festival. Tanabata celebrates the reunion of Orihime (the star Vega) and Hikoboshi (the star Altair), lovers separated by the Milky Way all year—except for the night of the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunisolar calendar. While some regions … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Tanabata
