North Americans may say, “So what?” But squirrels like this are a rarity in Japan.
There are flying squirrels in the mountains, and this kind of squirrel in… Kamakura! Legend has it they escaped from a zoo exhibit during a typhoon and made their way to our little city. Many a high school student has ignored the historical monuments in favour of snapping pics of one of the little guys.
Seeing one at our house was a surprise, though, as they rarely come this close to the sea. We assume it’s because of the kites—big birds of prey—who are more than happy to make a meal of out them.
Somehow, this little fellow must have lost his way (or his marbles) to venture out here.
