It's almost lotus season, and the early ones are already budding. These lotus leaves are from a small plant at Kosoku-ji, a small temple next to Hasedera. Kosoku-ji has an impressive garden, but not too many lotus flowers. For a pond-full, head over to Hachimangu, where hundreds upon hundreds of blossoms stretch up towards the … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Lotus Leaves
Photo of the Day: Rainy Day
Everything is dripping water today as the rainy season finally starts living up to its name. A friend of ours told Hisashi the other day that June used to be a dead month in Kamakura, with hardly any tourists. Then one of the temples planted hydrangeas (the official flower of the rainy season), and suddenly, … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Rainy Day
Photo of the Day: Waiting By the Tracks
Just what are all these people waiting for, cameras in hand? Why, they're waiting to get a shot of our most adorable little train with hydrangeas in the background. And there was only one thing to do—join them.
Photo of the Day: Last of the Pickles
The pickle shop had heaps more fantastic-looking pickle displays, but it was filling up with visitors, so I thought I'd better back off with my iPad. I'll try to get down another day to snap some shots of the mountains of ume boshi (pickled plum).
Photo of the Day: Up-Close Koma
A slightly closer look at a Japanese top. Not much more to say.
Photo of the Day: Up-Close Kite
A kite pulls up from a swoop to get kebab at a Kamakura festival. I should try to get a recording of kites calling. It's a wonderful sound.
Photo of the Day: More Pickles!
Pickles again. What can I say? They all looked amazing. These are gobo (burdock root) pickles.
Photo of the Day: Rickshaw
While out cycling, we came across two rickshaws parked in a lot. I took the opportunity to have a close-up look—no touching or anything, of course. Sadly, my photography skills didn't quite capture some of the neat angles that my eyes saw, but it was a start.
Photo of the Day: Folded Up
Umbrella shops make me imagine a world like that described by Emile Zola in Au Bonheur des Dames. It's magical—the colours, styles... This particular shop is on Komachi Dori.
Photo of the Day: Pickled Eggplant
Komachi Dori is the main tourist shopping street in Kamakura. Amongst the knick-knacks and restaurants, there's a small pickle shop with lots of free samples. We arrived just as a shopkeeper set out a new mountain of eggplant pickles. Love the colour.
