These characters wandered past our front gate early Sunday morning, causing more than a bit of surprise. Our neighbour told us they were likely public relations cosplayers for the day's festival. When we got to the festival, sure enough, there they were, camped out under flapping Kamakura flags.
Photo of the Day: Game Time
More spinning tops, but these ones are ready for battle. In this game, you toss your metal top down on the playing circle and try to knock your opponents top off. It's kind of like sumo for tops. While I've had some success spinning the big koma from Monday's post, proper spinning has eluded me … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Game Time
Photo of the Day: Boatful ‘a’ Shells
It's sazae season down the Shonan coast. Sazae are, well, sea snails (or, more accurately, turban shells, a kind of mollusc). Mmmmmmboy, right? ...I'm not a big fan. I like escargots, but that's mostly because they're drowning in garlic butter, sometimes lost in pastry, and always small. Sazae are not small. The Japanese love them—grilled, … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Boatful ‘a’ Shells
Photo of the Day: Anchors
The afternoon before the typhoon, the fishermen and women along our stretch of beach hauled all their equipment and boats up as high as they could. That included this fine collection of anchors, which I'd never noticed before.
Photo of the Day: Taifuu Ikka
After a typhoon blows through, the weather goes from wild to wonderful. That perfect post-storm weather is called taifuu ikka in Japanese. Last night, we had a very early typhoon blow through. Typhoon #6 (Noul) was a super typhoon when it hit the Philippines and Taiwan, but was much, much weaker when it arrived in … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Taifuu Ikka
Photo a Day: Red Tide Evening
The night after a red tide, the plankton glow blue, providing quite a light show. Clearly, I need to work on my nighttime photo skills. But, just to give you an idea of how cool the night after a red tide is, here is an unprocessed picture of the blue glowing surf.
Photo of the Day: Digging for Fish Food
I think the older gentlemen who spend their afternoons digging for worms actually prefer the digging to the fishing. They seem to spend much more time digging, and find much greater success with the worms, too.
Photo of the Day: Beach Tree
So... Is this some kind of seaweed? I have no idea, but the colors were nice, and the shape reminiscent of a "tree of life".
Photo of the Day: Wistful Dreaming
Staring off into the distance is a favourite pastime of mine, and pretty much everyone who comes to the beach, it seems. Another favourite pastime of beach goers—well, locals at least—is digging for various creatures. The fellow in the background was digging for hamaguri clams. The ones near shore are small, and are nice in … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Wistful Dreaming
Photo of the Day: Little Rivers
I love the patterns that appear in the sand as the tide comes in and out. I love how much the beach changes every day. I had no idea that things changed so often and so much on the seaside. Clearly, I did not grow up by the sea.
