Crabs aren't just found on the beach—they live in rivers, yards, and even come crawling down the roads. This particular crab made its way to the top of our neighbour's concrete wall, and was enjoying a stroll when Hisashi spied him. He didn't appreciate me getting so close, but did do a bit of posing … Continue reading Photo of the Day: House Crab
Photo of the Day: Beach Fun
It's burning hot out there, but there's plenty of ocean to cool down in. The other day, Hisashi took Kaede out for a splash. Low tide is the best time for a play, but depending on the stretch of beach, high tide is okay, too.
Photo of the Day: Sky Gazing
Is there anything nicer than a cool walk on the beach at dusk? The beach is rather covered with sea junk thanks to wave action from various typhoons, but an evening stroll still feels pretty sweet.
Photo of the Day: Marine Day Beach Crowds
Today is Marine Day in Japan, a national holiday. It's also summer holidays (finally! They don't start until about the end of the third week of July here), so the beach is starting to fill up. The beach houses have been open for weeks, and now, with all the beach-goers, it actually feels like summer.
Photo of the Day: Nighttime Matsuri
Summer nights in Japan mean drums and flutes. Not every night of course, though depending on where you live, it can get to feeling that way. Kaede and I love matsuri music, so we hopped onto the tail-end of this small neighbourhood festival and walked a few blocks with them.
Photo of the Day: Typhoon Prep
Typhoon # 11 is pouring its way through Japan right now, and though Kamakura isn't in the storm's direct path, it's still going to get some wind, rain and wave action. To keep their boats from getting washed away, the fishermen along our beach drag their boats up to street-level—and sometimes pretty much along the … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Typhoon Prep
Photo of the Day: Up-Close Kite
A kite pulls up from a swoop to get kebab at a Kamakura festival. I should try to get a recording of kites calling. It's a wonderful sound.
Photo of the Day: Rainy Season Hydrangeas
Hydrangeas, or ajisai, are the flowers of June and the rainy season in Kamakura. Everywhere you look, tufts of blue, white and pink turn the city into a rainbow. Too bad their appearance coincides with day after day of rain (which so far at least has been fairly scarce this year).
Photo of the Day: The Octopus
Hisashi has quite an eye for sea creatures. While playing on the beach with Kaede and friends the other day, he noticed a little something somersaulting across the sand. Closer inspection revealed it to be a wee octopus. We had a good look, and the kiddies got to (gently) feel the suction cups and watch … Continue reading Photo of the Day: The Octopus
Photo a Day: Kamakura Cosplay
These characters wandered past our front gate early Sunday morning, causing more than a bit of surprise. Our neighbour told us they were likely public relations cosplayers for the day's festival. When we got to the festival, sure enough, there they were, camped out under flapping Kamakura flags.
