Looking back from the first landing of the Amanawa Jinja staircase. To the side was a bon dance area, but my timing was off and they were on break. Too bad, as I love bon dances!
Photo of the Day: As You Like It
Okonomiyake—as-you-like-it pancakes—are a favourite festival food, though Hisashi is adamant that okonomiyake doesn't taste any good when eaten as street food. Still, it makes for a beautiful booth.
Photo of the Day: Into the Fray
Amanawa Jinja sits at the top of a hill, and it's a rather steep climb up a concrete staircase to get there. The festival takes place all along the steps, and I'm amazed there aren't more stair-related injuries. This was the first of the food booths, just at the landing to the first flight of … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Into the Fray
Photo of the Day: Lanterns
Lanterns are one of my favourite parts of summer festivals. And Amanawa Jinja has a nice collection of bright, colourful lanterns.
Photo of the Day: Heading to the Matsuri
To matsuri properly, one must invest in some traditional Japanese clothing. The kiddies in this photo are wearing yukata, or summer kimono made of cotton. Small kids and boys can also wear jimbei, a short-and-top combination. I'm a big fan of jimbei—they're fantastically comfortable—but I've been told it's not becoming of a grown, child-having woman … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Heading to the Matsuri
Photo of the Day: Amanawa Jinja Matsuri
Amanawa Jinja hosts one of the last bon festivals of the summer in this area. Being one of the last doesn't mean people are too tired to celebrate, however. The place was packed, and over the next few days, I'll post festival photos. I'm starting small today, with just the shrine's lanterns.
Photo of the Day: Colourful Kamakura-gu
Throwback... Monday, with a photo of fall colours at Kamakura-gu. Kamakura-gu has a white torii, which isn't too common, but not unheard of. Most torii in the area are either unpainted or red. The white is a nice change, and let's the fall colours really shine.
Photo of the Day: Fireworks
Japan loves fireworks. Like, loooves them. Big city, small city—every city with even an ounce of self-respect has a hanabi taikai. Okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration. But not by much. Kamakura—swimming in self-respect as it is–hosts a very popular fireworks show every July. We can see it from our yard, though the view is … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Fireworks
Photo of the Day: Taifu Ikka
A bit of flashback Friday for today's photo, taken back in the fall. The morning after Typhoon 19 (Vongfang) blew through, I snuck out to snap a few pics of the weather clearing. Good weather after a typhoon is called "taifu ikka", and the sky post-19 didn't disappoint.
Morning Snaps
In winter, you don't have to be an early bird to catch the sunrise. I sneaked out just past 7am for a run and snapped these shots along the way. I wasn't the only runner/photographer, either—I think at least half the runners I saw stopped to whip out a smartphone.
