It's not really furin season anymore, but there was a display at Kowaki-en Hotel in Hakone the other day, and it was all kinds of pretty. Kaede was pretty impressed, too.
Photo of the Day: Beach Gazing
It's that time of year again! It's actually cool enough to go to the beach and have a play—without burning or getting heatstroke. We're thoroughly enjoying it.
Photo of the Day: Unknown Shrine
This little shrine was without English-language plaque, so I'm not sure what it's called, but it was out the west side of Kamakura Station and had two rather fabulous trees.
Photo of the Day: Cosmos
Japan loves its seasonal flowers, and one of the big ones for autumn is cosmos. So pretty.
Photo of the Day: Butterfly
It has nothing to do with Kamakura, and it wasn't taken there, either (it was taken at the Kanazawa Zoo), but I do love these butterflies, so here it is. Japan always surprises me with all its butterflies and dragonflies, even in the city.
Photo of the Day: Little Statues
A few weeks ago, Kaede and I went on a little walk along some back streets we'd yet to explore. We followed a sign for a temple into a little subdivision and came across Jokomyo-ji, one of the area's oldest temples. Photo of the Day: Fishing for Crayfish
Chopsticks, string and a bit of dried squid—that's all you need to catch crayfish in murky water. A popular activity from spring through fall, kids spend hours crouched over pond banks, dangling their makeshift fishing rods.
Photo of the Day: Under the Conifers
The walk from the outer gate to the inner gate is pretty short at Jufuku-ji, but it's beautiful and peaceful.
Photo of the Day: The Gate at Jufuku-ji
Heading towards Kita-Kamakura from Kamakura Station, following the Yokosuka Line tracks out the west side of the station, are quite a few small shrines and temples that are somewhat off the beaten track. One of the bigger temples is Jufuku-ji. Now, you can't actually enter the temple area, but it's a nice, short walk up … Continue reading Photo of the Day: The Gate at Jufuku-ji
Photo of the Day: Higanbana
You know it's fall when these red flowers start showing up. You also know it's time to get yourself to the family grave to do some tidying and paying of respects. Just don't touch them, or you'll end up in a certain amount of distress—they're poisonous.
