Lanterns are a dime a dozen in Japan, but that doesn't mean I'm tired of them. Quite the contrary. To me, lanterns are a warm, glowing light in the night that make me feel all home-y and comfortable. This particular lantern is from the entrance to Zeniarai Benten. There was one on either side of … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Evening Lantern
Photo of the Day: Spring is Springing
There's nothing like a bit of brilliant green to get a body pumped for spring. This verdant ground covering is from Kosoku-ji, a particularly be-gardened temple near Hase Station.
Photo of the Day: Boats in a Row
Boats all lined up—very satisfying.
Photo a Day: Now *That’s* a Door
If your aim is to keep power-hungry samurai from your abode, a door like this is the only way to go. This particular door is for the gate at Odawara Castle. The gate wall is thicker than I am tall, and made of huge stone blocks. It's pretty impressive.
Photo of the Day: Dripping Petals

Photo of the Day: Sakura Pink
Another cherry blossom photo—I can't help it! They're everywhere! Today, our neighbour took us on a trip to Odawara Castle down the coast. The castle area is famous for all sorts of flowers—cherry, wisteria, iris, hydrangea, etc. Beautiful!

Too bad, because the first-sight angle was much better. Oh, well. But it just goes to … Continue reading Photo of the Day: High Flyer
Photo of the Day: Colourful Kamakura-gu
Throwback... Monday, with a photo of fall colours at Kamakura-gu. Kamakura-gu has a white torii, which isn't too common, but not unheard of. Most torii in the area are either unpainted or red. The white is a nice change, and let's the fall colours really shine.
Photo of the Day: Candle Burning
A candle burns at Zeniarai Benten. Just a quick note today as we've happily got a very full house: Happy Easter
