Koi swim in a circle at Zeniarai Benten. Zeniarai has two koi ponds, this one, and one in a back corner and up a set of stone steps.
Photo a Day: Red Tide Evening
The night after a red tide, the plankton glow blue, providing quite a light show. Clearly, I need to work on my nighttime photo skills. But, just to give you an idea of how cool the night after a red tide is, here is an unprocessed picture of the blue glowing surf.
Photo of the Day: Windmill Rainbow
I let 3-year-old Kaede choose today's photo, and she went with the brightest one I had. Not surprising, really, since it's a good memory of a fun day out. Yesterday's photo was of a torii gate on the way to Hayama, and the reason we were headed out that way was to take Kaede to … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Windmill Rainbow
Photo of the Day: Torii in the Water
Not far up the coast from Kamakura is a lovely little cottage town called Hayama. So lovely is it, that the Imperial Family has a large cottage compound there. Photo of the Day: Crane Box
A box full of origami cranes at Kuzuharaoka Shrine. There are a few unique things about this shrine—coins on strings, heart-shaped prayer tablets, clay dishes for smashing, and this box of paper cranes. Small, but well worth the hike.
Photo of the Day: Feathered Friend
Though adults might find the cages small and pitiful, kids sure love feeding the two peacocks on display at Kosoku-ji. And they are very well-fed birds, as beside the temple is a kindergarten.
Photo of the Day: In an Incense Fog
A final (I think) photo from the mantoukai held at Kotoku-in (the Daibutsu) in memory of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Of course, our thoughts are now also with Nepal.
Photo of the Day: Digging for Fish Food
I think the older gentlemen who spend their afternoons digging for worms actually prefer the digging to the fishing. They seem to spend much more time digging, and find much greater success with the worms, too.
Photo of the Day: Fence Lines
Challenging myself to posting a photo a day for a year has made me pay closer attention to the things around me. I find that I notice angles, details—all sorts of minor bits and pieces of my surroundings, and think, "hey, that's neat." This fence detail was one of those times.
Photo of the Day: Beach Tree
So... Is this some kind of seaweed? I have no idea, but the colors were nice, and the shape reminiscent of a "tree of life".
