I told you there'd be more persimmon photos. I just can't.get.enough. These were miniature persimmons–I'd never seen such a thing! They looked almost like cherry tomatoes hanging on a vine. We came across them at the Picasso Museum in Hakone, a hot-spring area about an hour/hour-and-a-half from Kamakura.
A Fine Fall Day
The first winds of winter may have started blowing this week, but the afternoons are still gloriously warm. Hisashi bought a small boat the other day, fulfilling a year-long dream, and took Kaede out for a little row. By the time I joined them on the beach, they were back to shore, and Kaede was … Continue reading A Fine Fall Day
Penny Thanks
While walking down the Daibutsu hiking trail past Kuzuharaoka, I came across this memorial of sorts covered in one-yen pieces. I'm not sure what it's for, and Hisashi wasn't sure of the kanji, but the Kamakura area is so full of history that coming across random markers and memorials isn't very unusual.
Belly Rubbing Happiness
Need some happiness? Cheer? General pleasantness in life? Just give Hotei sama's belly a rub, and all will come up rosy. Hotei sama is in the cemetery area of Jochi-ji, a temple in Kita-Kamakura. Yesterday's persimmon photos were also from Jochi-ji.
Orbs of Orange
I just can't get enough of all the persimmons! I loooooooove persimmon trees (kaki): colour, shape, variety, sparsely leafed, full of foliage... I love them all! So you'll probably be seeing more persimmons before the season ends.
Bamboo Love
I went on what was supposed to be a short hike to some temples and shrines in town the other day, but which became an epic seven-hour tour of places I haven't been in ages, and some I'd never visited before. Starting out on the Daibutsu hiking trail, I continued as it joined the Kuzuharaoka … Continue reading Bamboo Love
Photo of the Day: More Rice Shop
The other window at the rice shop. Love it.
Photo of the Day: Tucked Away
So this shop isn't along Yuigahama Dori, but rather the street that leads to the Daibutsu. For the most part, shops along there shut down early, but there are a few that manage to keep the lights on past tea time.
Photo of the Day: Antique Shop
Towards the downtown end of Yuigahama Dori is an antique shop full of furniture. And then there's this one, full of random bits and pieces of days gone by. This one is much more interesting to walk by.
Photo of the Day: Not Your Average Rice Shop
I love this shop. It sells rice, rice and more rice, which isn't unusual at all here in Japan. But, it's the fanciest rice shop I've ever seen, and that makes me happy. Boutique rice.
