Kamakura days are hot, but thankfully, the nights are cool. We have the breeze off the water to thank for that. The other day, Kaede and I took advantage of the dropping temperature to take a little walk. It turned into a beautiful night.
Photo of the Day: Grey Shrine for a Grey Day
Well, today was supposed to be Kamakura's big fireworks show, but alas, Typhoon #12, while not overhead, is wreaking havoc with the bay and it has been cancelled. So, for this sad, grey day, a somewhat sad, grey shrine.
Photo of the Day: Ocean Seen Through Whimsy
Like I was saying yesterday, one of the fishermen on our beach likes to get creative. It gives the ocean view an extra bit of charm.
Photo of the Day: Happy Cat
One of the fishing houses by our inn is what you might call whimsical. Not only is the roof a bold display of colourful stripes, various sea junk has been turned into art. This smiling fellow is one of my favourites.
Photo of the Day: Marine Day Beach Crowds
Today is Marine Day in Japan, a national holiday. It's also summer holidays (finally! They don't start until about the end of the third week of July here), so the beach is starting to fill up. The beach houses have been open for weeks, and now, with all the beach-goers, it actually feels like summer.
Photo of the Day: Nighttime Matsuri
Summer nights in Japan mean drums and flutes. Not every night of course, though depending on where you live, it can get to feeling that way. Kaede and I love matsuri music, so we hopped onto the tail-end of this small neighbourhood festival and walked a few blocks with them.
Photo of the Day: Lonely Shrine
There is a small shrine down the road from us that gets very few visitors. It's a branch of another shrine in town, so it's not completely neglected, but it does feel rather abandoned.
Photo of the Day: Surf Lessons
As I walked by Enoshima Beach the other day, I noticed a group of people all moving in odd ways at the same time. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was a surfing school, and the students were doing a dry-land run of paddle-crouch-stand.
Photo of the Day: Typhoon Prep
Typhoon # 11 is pouring its way through Japan right now, and though Kamakura isn't in the storm's direct path, it's still going to get some wind, rain and wave action. To keep their boats from getting washed away, the fishermen along our beach drag their boats up to street-level—and sometimes pretty much along the … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Typhoon Prep
Photo of the Day: Summer Fuji
Usually by July, the heat and humidity produce enough haze to make Mt. Fuji but a dim memory for those along the Shonan coast. But I guess the wind has been blowing hard enough to keep the haze at bay, because this morning, Mt. Fuji was still plenty visible. While you can't see it from … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Summer Fuji
