Matsuri (festivals) are a major part of Japanese summer. With traditional, international and fireworks festivals on the go, you could easily cram every weekend of summer full of celebration.
For kids, it’s all about the games and prizes (and food). Pictured is one of the standard games, where kids try to “fish” a little balloon out of a pool using a hooked piece of wire attached to paper thread. The balloons are all fastened to short elastics with a loop at the end for the hook to catch.
The paper thread eventually disintegrates and dashes all hopes, but if the child is small, they usually walk away with their choice of balloon anyway.
