If Hisashi had his way, our entire yard would be nothing but hibiscus. Which isn't a bad thing at all. How can you hate a flower that looks good even in black-and-white?
Photo of the Day: Beach House
Thai Mura, the food court of Yuigahama Beach. "No tattoos allowed", according to the sign (pretty normal for Japan), but the night we were there, a fellow with quite a nice black tiger tattoo taking up half his back seemed to be purposely showing it off. Not surprisingly, no one did anything. I didn't feel … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Beach House
Photo of the Day: Lotus Leftovers
Between being busy with the inn and the oppressive afternoon heat, we didn't get a chance to make it across town to see the lotus flowers at Hachimangu. I had actually completely forgotten, but then came across this lotus flower head on a walk. Such a shame! But at least the blossom-less heads are still … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Lotus Leftovers
Photo of the Day: Sparkle, Sparkle
Oh, how I love summer sparklers.
Photo of the Day: Beach House
We took today off. It's been a busy summer season, which is fantastic. But it means we haven't had a chance to try any of the beach houses set up for July and August. Today was our chance. Of course, it poured rain and was windy, so our first choice was closed. Instead, we checked … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Beach House
Photo of the Day: Peek-a-Boo Fish
The goldfish got an awning of sorts for their clay pot this summer. These guys are one of the highlights of our walk home from Kamakura Station. I was happy to see that they're getting some help staying cool.
Photo of the Day: Red Flag
The sharks are out. Our neighbour says that in 60 years, he can't recall there ever being a shark-related swimming prohibition, but there is a first time for everything, of course. So, until tomorrow, the beach is closed to swimmers. Too bad for all those who came down for a dip!
Photo of the Day: Evening Cicada
I think the first time I saw one of these, it was flying wildly through the air before crashing into me. Cicada-human collisions aren't all that uncommon from mid-August on, but they're still kind of freaky. Happily, this cicada (and his wall buddy... and the dozens of others making a racket in the garden next … Continue reading Photo of the Day: Evening Cicada
Photo of the Day: Dignified Gentleman
While walking down Yuigahama Dori, I crossed paths with this most dignified fellow in summer kimono (yukata) and walking stick. I couldn't help myself—I dawdled behind him and snuck a snapshot.
Photo of the Day: Colliding Waves
Things have been so busy at the inn lately that my aim to post one photo a day for a year has taken a bit of a hit. I've missed a few days the past few weeks, but I'll keep trying.
